Major New York media continues to connect Ryu Hyun-jin, a 37-year-old free agent, with the New York Mets. Analysts say that Ryu Hyun-jin is a customized free agent due to the Mets team’s need for a semi-quick start under a short-term contract.
The U.S. “New York Post” said on the 3rd (Korean time), “While Metz is having a disappointing offseason, there is still work for David Stearns, president of baseball operations,” adding that FA recruitment is needed in various positions, including starters, bullpens, third basemen and outfielders, for the remaining six weeks until spring training.
After signing right-hander Luis Severino to a one-year, 13 million-dollar contract on April 2, the Mets have not signed a free agent. They acquired right-hander Adrian Houser of the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade, but they missed out on pitchers who paid keen attention to such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Lucas Giolito of the Boston Red Sox.
The New York Post explained, “The Mets failed to recruit a big player despite Stearns’ history and owner Steve Cohen’s abundant financial resources. The Mets, who missed Yamamoto, who was the No. 1 FA, may turn their attention to Shota Imana, but they are reluctant to sign a long-term contract as they have decided to reset the team in 2024.
“The Mets are likely to choose other options because it is expensive to recruit left-handers who have a strong season like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery,” he said, adding, “30-year-old Imana, who came from Japan, remains an interesting FA for Mike Clevinger, Sean Manaea, and Ryu Hyun-jin, who returned from Tommy John surgery,” raising Ryu Hyun-jin as one of the Mets’ candidates for recruitment.
Regarding Ryu Hyun-jin, the New York Post said, “He will turn 37 in March, but he pitched 52 innings and played quite well with a 3.46 ERA after his return in August last year. Due to elbow surgery and the COVID-19 reduction season in 2020, Ryu Hyun-jin has only played more than 67 innings a season since 2020,” acknowledging that there is a risk in that there is only one full-time season in the last four years.
Ryu threw 169 innings in 2021, the most innings in his four years, and played only 27 and 52 innings in the last two years, respectively, when he underwent Tommy John surgery and rehabilitation. The New York Post, however, said, “Ryu could sign a one-year contract with the Mets, who never want to spend a lot of money on the starting lineup after missing out on Yamamoto.”
The New York Post has consistently mentioned Ryu Hyun-jin as a candidate for the Mets. Another New York media outlet, SNY, also cited Ryu Hyun-jin as one of the four starting pitchers in the FA that the Mets should look out for on April 31, saying, “He is the most stable and efficient left-hander when he is on the mound despite the risk of injury. He is one of the best middle-class FA starters the Mets can target. Similar to Severino, signing a one or two-year contract would be reasonable.” 마카오토토도메인
Major media in New York continue to see the possibility of Ryu going to the Mets, but it is not known whether he will be able to do so. All the reports that have been released so far are only predictions and recommendations from local media, but there is no specific “source” of interest. Ryu’s recent destinations include the San Diego Padres and the Boston Red Sox, but this is no different.
