Defensive weaknesses overshadowed by offense, KCC falls short in result

KCC’s defensive weaknesses were exposed and the team was blown out.

Busan KCC suffered a 20-point (84-104) first-round loss to Changwon LG in the 2023-2024 Korean Basketball League at Changwon Gymnasium on Tuesday. Kim Dong-hyun (17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Lee Ho-hyun (16 points, 3 rebounds), and Alize Johnson (12 points, 9 rebounds) played well, but it was not enough to overcome the opponent’s firepower.

First back-to-back losses of the season. With a 2-3 record, KCC’s five-game winning streak collapsed and they dropped to seventh place.

Before the start of the season, KCC, along with Seoul SK, was considered a strong favorite to win the title this season. With Heo Woong (185 cm, G) and Lee Seung-hyun (197 cm, C), KCC added Choi Jun-yong (200 cm, F) in the summer free agency market. In addition, Song Kyo-chang (198 cm, F) will soon return from military service.

With an ultra-luxury lineup and a super team, KCC could be a title contender if they were at full strength.

However, their start to the season has been anything but smooth. Ambitious recruit Choi Jun-yong is out of action due to injury, and Song Kyo-chang is not in the best shape.

Despite all of this, KCC has been able to stay in the middle of the pack thanks to the play of Alize Johnson. So far, Johnson has been the team’s ace in the hole, averaging 21.4 points, 15.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in five games.

With Johnson’s strength in transition, KCC has been able to run a fast-paced, high-scoring offense in the regular season. Currently, KCC ranks second in scoring average at 88.6 points per game. They also run the fastest at 5.8, second only to the Wonju DBs (6.4).

While the offense produces a lot of points, it also gives up a lot of points on defense. Until today’s game, KCC is averaging 91.6 points per game. 보스토토

Their defensive weaknesses, which have been largely hidden by their offensive prowess, have been exposed and they’ve been blown out of the water. Against LG, KCC was frequently exposed on defense. They gave up too many open shots from the perimeter and didn’t control the ball well enough. Being outplayed and outworked, KCC was dragged down, and they were unable to change the momentum.

After the game, KCC head coach Jeon Chang-jin said, “Our defense was a problem today. We used to cover our defensive weaknesses with our offense, but our offense was not smooth today. It’s a complete loss,” citing the defense as the reason for the defeat.

With their pride as a super team firmly intact, addressing their defensive weaknesses will be a top priority for KCC if they want to move up the leaderboard.
