‘What is this’ Tottenham outnumbered as ‘Yves Bissouma sent off’…draw 0-0 with promoted Luton

Tottenham Hotspur faces a numerical disadvantage.

Tottenham faces Luton Town in the eighth round of the 2023-24 Premier League (PL) at Kenilworth Road Stadium in Luton, England, on July 7 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The first half ended 0-0 with neither side scoring and Tottenham facing a numerical disadvantage.

The home side lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The top striker was once again captain Son Heung-min. The second line was made up of Heung-min, James Maddison, and Dejan Kuluczewski. The center backs were Yves Bissouma and Pape Saar. The back four consisted of Destiny Udoji, Mickey van der Penn, Christian Romero, and Pedro Foro. Guglielmo Vicario was in goal.

The visitors, Luton, lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation. Carlton Morris up front and Elijah Adebayo in the second line. In midfield, Chiedozie Ogbenee, Marvellous Nakamba, Pelly Ruddock Mpanjoo, and Jacob Brown held down the fort. In defense, Alfie Doherty, Mads Andersen, Tom Lockyer, and Reece Burke. The goalkeeper’s gloves were worn by Tomasz Kaminski.

From the kickoff, Tottenham attacked. In the second minute, a cross was sent into the penalty box from the right flank. Looking for an opening in the back of the defense, the Frenchman took a shot, but it was deflected wide. In the fifth minute, Foro had a one-on-one chance following a Son Heung-min penetrating pass, but again, he failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

Captain Son Heung-min, who started despite injury concerns, took the reins. A long ball into the Luton danger area in the 10th minute. It was headed back to Heung-Min Son. It was a giddy moment for Tottenham. In the 38th minute, Luton won a free kick. After a contested ball in the box, Adebayor curled it high. The ball deflected off the post and Lockyer slid in a header to split the net. It looked like the balance was off, but the referee disallowed the goal, calling a foul on Adebayo for pushing Romero in the contest.

To make matters worse, there was more bad news. Bissouma went down after the collision in first-half stoppage time. The referee produced a second yellow card and a red card for simulation and sent him off. No goals were scored in the remaining time. The first half ended 0-0.
